A.M. EDC
* This week the EDC students started a new, interactive story called, 'Stirring The Stew' by Ms. Jenna. A little witch wanted to make a yummy stew, however she needs help finding all of the items she would like to put in her stew. The students had to help read the story and find were the items were placed around the classroom. For example, the witch needed a spider and the students read the picture using visual cues "The spider is under the sand table". This allows students to practice their prepositional words, language development (e.g. "I found it!") and sequencing (e.g. first, then, last). Once we have found all the items for the stew we place them in a big pot, stir it all up and get to use their imaginations to taste! The students also had the opportunity to create 3D ghosts for our window, a mummy using marbles to paint, and their own 3D pumpkins while learning about different shapes. Ms. Jenna also brought in two real pumpkins for the students to practice their painting skills using puck paint, which when a student is done wipes off with water! It was a very fun week in EDC! P.M. EDC & Kindergarten * The afternoon students also got the chance to read 'Stirring The Stew' by Ms. Jenna and help find all the items around the classroom. Not only did the students enjoy locating the items while practicing prepositional words they learned new descriptive vocabulary including 'disgusting', 'stinky', 'gross', 'smelly', and 'cauldron'. The students also created some art work this week including, 3D ghosts, their own pumpkin faces, a mummy using marbles, and paper chains (working on 2-part patterns). We also touched on Halloween safety in preparation for trick-or-treating and will be revisiting these safety rules next week as well. Reminders: * I will be having a Halloween celebration on Thursday for both the morning and afternoon students. I will be providing some special treats (popcorn, veggies, fruit, cheese & crackers) as well as a special show (educational based). The students are welcome to ware their costumes to school this day as we will be taking part in a whole school parade. The Save On Foods store located in Richmond Square were nice enough to donate pumpkins for our classrooms, and I will be carving a pumpkin for each class. I will be sending more information home on Monday about Thursday and our classroom celebration. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

My apologies on not getting our blog post up on Friday, it seems as though short weeks are always the busiest! I just want to say a big thank you to all of the EDC families that came to parent-teacher interviews this past week. It was so nice touching base with everyone and making sure we are doing everything we can to support our wonderful students!
*Rosscarrock uses the Three Pillars of Care, here is a break down of what this looks like in our school community: Three Pillars of Care Our school uses the Three Pillars of Care to help students and staff communicate our shared expectations. These pillars are referred to daily, both within our classes and we proudly recognize students who are outstanding role models. Care for Self · Be on time for school. · Be organized and return notices promptly. · Be accountable for your actions. · Be clean and tidy in your dress and with your belongings. · Be prepared for learning by listening and following directions. · Be responsible and use appropriate language in school, on the playground and on field trips. Care for Others · Be kind and courteous to classmates, staff and visitors to our school. · Be aware and tell an adult when you see someone who is hurt either in their body or in their feelings. · Be responsible for making sure that others feel safe and welcome at our school. Care for Place · Be respectful of public property, community and personal property. · Be thoughtful about your litter and place it in the garbage cans by the school doors. · Be responsible for keeping your work, eating areas and playground tidy. · Be careful to remove wet and dirty footwear to help keep our school clean and dry. · Be environmentally aware by reducing daily waste and bringing lunches and snacks in recyclable containers. Reminders: * On Tuesday, October 22nd from 5:30-6:30 p.m. there will be a FOP session at the school around Language Development. If you attended the FOP on Friday, October 18th thank you! This Tuesday session will be a repeat of Friday's session. * I am planning on having a Halloween celebration/party Thursday, October 31st for both the a.m. and p.m. classes. We will also be participating in a whole school parade. I will send more information home about this closer to the date! * School Pictures have been sent home. If you would like your child to receive a picture re-take it will be November 6th. Please let me know if you would like your child to have a retake so I can let the office know! This week, I was so proud of both the EDC and Kindergarten students and how much they accomplished! Here are some updates:
A.M. EDC * The students had so much fun this week! We started our new book, 'Big Pumpkin' by Erica Silverman and the kids did a great job remembering all the characters (e.g. bat, ghost, vampire, mummy) in the story. We worked on our problem solving skills and how the witch could get the pumpkin off the vine, the students decided that if all the characters worked together they could get the pumpkin! Ms. Jenna also introduced new centers including, dollhouse, dress-up and farm all of which the students loved playing with this week! P.M. EDC & Kindergarten * The afternoon students had a blast learning all about pumpkins this week! They had their first opportunity to draw their own pumpkins with different shapes that we have been learning about and practicing writing their names. Ms. Jenna was so proud of all their great work! The students really enjoyed using their imagination during dress-up and practicing their cutting skills at our cutting center. Reminders: * NO SCHOOL Monday, October 14th! * EDC Interviews next Thursday and Friday (October 17th & 18th). There will be NO SCHOOL for EDC students Thursday morning (October 17th) as I will be parent/teacher interviews from 8:00-11:30. I will also be having interviews Friday morning (October 18th) from 8:30- 12:00. These interviews will be a chance to talk about any concerns or ask questions as well as go over your child's first IPP report. I will be calling parents later today to set up times to meet. If you have any questions please call the school or e-mail me at [email protected] I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend !! The EDC and Kindergarten students had such a fun filled week at school! Here are some updates:
A.M. EDC: * The EDC students had a blast with our book, "Jump Into Fall". They really enjoyed finding all the different coloured leaves hidden around our classroom (e.g. 'The red leaf is in the sink'). The best part of the whole book is when we jump into the pile of leaves at the end of the story! This coming week we will be starting our month of Halloween stories and activities. Our first story we will be reading is called, "Big Pumpkin" by Erica Silverman. Our wonderful SLP, Mrs. Tracy has created an interactive activity that allows the students to place the different characters from the story into the witches spinning cauldron. This will be a fun story that will introduce new vocabulary, allow for turn taking and listening for instructions. P.M. EDC & Kindergarten: * The EDC and Kindergarten students had a great week of learning! As life happens, our plan to create our own jack-o-lanterns was postponed and we will be starting that this coming week. Ms. Jenna had the chance to read lots of stories this week, which is one of my favourite things to do with the kids. The students worked at literacy centers printing and making their names in a variety of ways, and took part in directed drawing activities on the whiteboards. I was very impressed with all the students in their ability to follow our drawing steps and create their own faces, full body drawings, a house and understand that the more details we add to our pictures the better they are! We also had a blast with Ms. Hannah on Thursday for our first session of Music. The kids had a chance to play her guitar, drum on her drums, dance, sing and learn some basic sign language! We can't wait to see her again next week. This week we will be creating our own jack-o-lanterns, learning about pumpkins, and will have a chance to play at our new dress-up and scissor cutting center. Reminders: * Monday, October 7th is Picture Day!!! * Thank you for making sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, as the weather gets colder it is very important that everyone has the proper clothing for outside explorations! * Thursday, October 17th & Friday the 18th will be parent teacher interviews for EDC students only!! I will be sending more information home next week about these interviews. Please check your child's communication folder! Another busy and exciting week in EDC and Kindergarten has flew by, and with that October is just around the corner! Here are some updates:
A.M. EDC * The students did a wonderful job learning the book "Glad Monster, Sad Monster" by Ed Emberley. They were all very engaged with the story and really enjoyed matching the faces to the different emotions. Next week we are starting a new book called, "Jump Into Fall" by Ms. Jenna. For this story I will be placing different coloured felt leaves all around the classroom and the students will have to go on a leaf hunt to find them. The students will be working on following one-step directions and learning preposition words (e.g. on, in front, behind, under, in, beside). We have had three new friends join our EDC program this week and we will be welcoming two more next week! P.M. EDC & Kindergarten * The students really enjoyed the story, "Pete The Cat and His Magic Sunglasses" by Kimberley and James Dean. They loved the idea that Pete didn't need his magic sunglasses to be happy, that it was his job to see the good in everyday. We also read "The Pigeon Has Feelings Too" by Mo Williams which gave some more examples of ways in which we feel and how it's ok to have different feelings. The Kindergartens are really enjoying the author Mo Williams who also writes "Piggy and Gerald" books which the students find hilarious! Next week we will be starting to learn all about pumpkins! We will be creating our own drawings of jack-o-lanterns, exploring all the parts of a pumpkin as well as creating some awesome fall/leaf art! We also have some very exciting news for the afternoon program....Ms. Hannah who is a music therapist will be joining our classroom every Thursday from 1:00-1:30 until December to teach us music! We are so excited to have her, and cannot wait to see all the fun activities she has planned for us! Reminders: * Picture day is coming October 7th! * As the weather is changing please make sure your child is dressed appropriately (eg. mittens, hats, jackets, closed toed shoes) as we will still continue to go outside to the park and get our fresh air. * Orange Shirt Day is Monday September 30th. Please don't go out and buy a new shirt, if your child already has one that is just fine. If they do not I will have some orange buttons to put on their shirt. I cannot believe we are already nearing the end of September, time flies when your having fun especially in EDC and Kindergarten! Thank you to those parents who reached out about parent teacher interviews and those that came in and said hello.
For the blog I will be separating my posts into two sections, one being the morning EDC class and the other the afternoon EDC/Kindergarten class just because we have lots going on and some information might not obtain to everyone. AM EDC * This coming week we will be starting a new story called, "Glad Monster, Sad Monster" by Ed Emberley. The students will have an opportunity to learn about different emotions such as feeling glad, sad, silly and mad. This will be an opportunity for the kids to identify and understand their emotions in an interactive way. We will also be talking about other emotions we feel during our learning circle. The students will get a chance to make their own feeling faces during arts and crafts as we started learning about different facial features in our last story. I love when everything ties together! PM EDC & Kindergarten * This coming week we will be starting a new story called, "Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses" by Kimberley and James Dean. I absolutely love Pete the Cat stories as they are funny, have great illustrations and connect the students with the story's message very well. This book will talk about different emotions we can feel and how we can deal with them in a healthy way. We will also be starting a new mini unit on belonging, being unique and celebrating all the things that make us special! Our first work task for the students will be drawing themselves and if anyone would like to, there will be an opportunity to share their work with their classmates. ** Reminders** - The first FOP session will be this coming Monday (23rd) at Rosscarrock school from 5:30-6:30. - Please label all of your child's belongings so we know what belongs to who - Please check your child's communication folder as I have some information that I will be sending home on Monday! Welcome our new classroom blog! As much as technology can be wonderful, it can also be frustrating. For some strange reason I am no longer able to access the old classroom blog so I have created a new one, fingers crossed this one does the trick!
Here are some very important updates: * Our afternoon EDC program has changed a bit. We are welcoming seven new Kindergarten students into our afternoon class! The start time and end time for the afternoon has remained the same 12:35-3:45 p.m. and drop off and pick up will still be at the front doors of the school. The EDC team is very excited to have the Kindergartens, especially myself as I once taught Kindergarten previously for three years. I am positive it is going to be a wonderful, fun and positive learning environment for both the EDC students and the Kindergartens! If anyone has any questions about this change please contact me or Mrs. Fraser at anytime. * Parent teacher interviews are this Thursday and Friday! At this time I will be speaking to the EDC families and Mrs. Fraser will be speaking with the Kindergarten families. The EDC interviews are a maximum of 30 minutes long. Please sign up for a time slot, if you have difficulties with this please give me a call or send me an e-mail and I can assist you. The times are: Thursday 4:30-8:00 p.m. Friday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Hope to see all of you later this week! |
