Happy start to spring break! Parents, myself, Mrs .Saadia and Ms. Christina have written a letter to the students if you could please help your child to read these letters it would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Boys & Girls, I want you to know that I miss all of you very much and I have been thinking about you a lot. I know lots of things have changed, but everything will be ok! All these changes are not to scare us but to keep us safe and healthy. I am still here for you even though we are not coming to school, I love all of you smart cookies sooooo much! I have been busy doing my ‘teacher’ work at home. Just because we are not coming to school right now doesn’t mean we have to stop learning. You can learn in so many ways and I challenge you to find new things to do and learn about while you are at home with your family. Remember to get outside and play! Fresh air is good for our bodies and brains and helps us to do our best learning! I will talk to you very soon and I hope you have a fun and safe spring break, don’t forget to wash your hands! Love Ms. Jenna Students of Rosscarrock, I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying the extended break. I am writing this letter to tell you how much we miss having you all at school, but during this difficult time, everyone’s health comes first. I’ve had so much fun with you whether at school or at the playground. I have seen you smile, laugh and love to learn. Most important piece of advice is always remember to smile and be kind since it makes you and others happy. “You have been a wonderful student and will always have a special place in my heart”. Hoping to see you soon. Love, Ms Saadia Hello EDC and Kindergarten, We miss you all already and hope you’re staying happy and healthy! Everything is going to be ok and you can come back to school soon. We are so proud of all of you, you have learned/ worked so hard this year. Be proud of yourselves! Remember to read lots of books, play with your favourite toys, play nicely with your siblings and have fun outside! Love, Ms. Christina Hi Parents,
Thank you for your patience and understanding during this uncertain time. I know with the sudden news Sunday of schools closing it has been difficult to process, however we all need to stay positive, stay healthy and continue to support one another! I want you to know that myself and the classroom team miss all of our students very much and are really hoping we can all get back to 'normal' life sooner rather than later. Thank you to those parents who came and picked up their child's belongings today. I am sorry I was not able to be there to say hello or answer any of your questions, however we are to follow protocol and teachers were not allowed to be in the gym. If your child was on an IPP (Individual program plan) I have included the updated version with their belongings. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the IPP, please feel free to e-mail me and I will get back to you as soon as I can. For the afternoon students, I have sent home their pet boxes as well as a variety of materials to finish the project. With the boxes I have also send home instructions and a guide to help support your child in finishing their box as well as some educational ideas you can do at home! For the morning students, along with their updated IPP I have included the daily visuals we use at school (our daily schedule, circle visuals and emotion visuals) to hopefully help with the transition from school to home. Please feel free to use these visuals as you see fit and if you have any questions you can e-mail me. I have also included some educational ideas you can do with your child at home. Please know that I am here to support you and your child the best I can in these circumstances. I truly care about each one of my students and I only want what is best for them. If you have questions, need support, need ideas or just want to touch base with me please e-mail me, I am here! Please continue to check the blog as this is where I will be posting new information and potential educational resources and ideas. I hope everyone is staying positive, sticking together and getting some quality time in with their loved ones. Things that have not been cancelled: - Going for a walk, jog or run - Enjoying nature - Playing with your pet - Reading a good book - Cooking a yummy meal with your family - Catching up on cleaning and organizing - Learning in new ways - Music - Spending time with your family and loved ones - Watching your favorite movie with popcorn - Board games - Naps - Happiness - Joy & hope - Love - Supporting one another Stay healthy, happy and safe everyone! Yesterday, the government announced that all classes are cancelled immediately and indefinitely due to COVID-19. We thank the government for listening to school boards and parents to support the health and safety of students, staff and families.
Please do not send your students to school Monday, March 16, 2020 and until further notice. Before and after school programs are also cancelled. Staff will be available at each school to ensure that, if students show up, parents will be contacted and expected to pick up their child immediately. More information will be sent to you in the coming days with details on when to pick up personal belongings, return library books, etc. Schools will create a pick up schedule which will be communicated to parents. Please note that yellow school buses and other specialized transportation will not be running tomorrow. Alberta Education has stated that every K-12 student will receive a final mark and students will progress to their next grade level next year. Provincial assessments, such as provincial achievement tests, will be cancelled. At this time, diploma exams essential for post-secondary acceptance will continue. Every student who is eligible to graduate from Grade 12 this year will graduate. We will continue to work with Alberta Education on these details. In the coming days, the CBE will be providing more information and supports for online learning, as appropriate. The government has also indicated that teachers and other staff are expected to work, either from their school or workplace. Spring break will continue as scheduled. During spring break, school buildings will be closed and school-based staff will not be working during this time. We know you have many questions. We will continue to update you as more details are confirmed. Thank you for your patience and support. Christopher Usih Chief Superintendent IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Dear Parents, Based on the changing provincial and local response to COVID-19, the CBE has given us direction to postpone our Parent Teacher Conferences (Student-led Open House) scheduled for March 18 & 19, 2020. If your child’s teacher has scheduled an appointment on Thursday March 19, 2020, your child’s teacher will call you at your appointment time, please make sure you are available at that time. All CBE schools have been given direction to postpone or cancel events that include populations from other schools and/or parents or other community members, such as Parent-Teacher Interviews, celebrations of learning, drama/musical performances, dances, athletic competitions, etc. This decision is effective from Mar. 12 until the end of March break. This decision will be revisited during March break to determine whether events should be rescheduled. Events outside of school hours that include the regular student and staff population of the school (school clubs, practices, etc) and scheduled field trips may continue at this time. I know this may be disappointing news. Students and staff have spent a significant amount of time preparing for this event, but the health of our community is our priority. For the most up to date information about the CBE’s approach to COVID-19 and the actions we are taking, please visit our website. Answers to frequently asked questions will continue to be posted as information becomes available. Thank you, Brenna Fraser Both the morning and afternoon students started the unit on pets! We also started some art work around St. Patricks day. Both groups created shamrock stamp art and cutting and pasting onto a shamrock template (they got to practice their fine motor skills).
EDC A.M. The morning group started reading, "Dogs Colourful Day" where dog ends up with a bunch of coloured spots on him from his day of adventures. Each student got to draw a coloured dot on dog (outline of a dog on a white board) and at the end of the story got to spray dog with water and wash his spots off using a sponge! They also started reading, "If You See a Whale" by Ms. Tracy. The students had to label each animal from the story and then had a chance to throw the animal (e.g. dolphin) into a bucket of water followed by an action. Everyone had a blast! Next week the students will have a chance to be a vet at our dramatic play vet center! Kindergarten & EDC P.M. - The afternoon group had a chance to learn about a variety of different pets and what they need to be happy, healthy and safe. We learned about dogs, cats, bunnies, turtles and birds so far ! The students will then take this learning and create their very own pet habitats out of shoe boxes and loose parts. We will be starting our shoe boxes next week. I've done this activity in the past and it is always a huge hit. Next week we will be learning all about veterinarians and how they help keep our pets healthy! The students will all have a chance to play at out dramatic vet center with vet supplies, checklists and play animals! Reminders: - P.M. students: If you haven't already sent a shoe box to school with your child please do so early next week! - I will be calling all parents at the beginning of next week to schedule a time for interviews. **Wednesday, March 18th from 4:30-8:00 will be for Kindergarten students only! This is a student lead interview, I will have stations set up in our classroom for your child to lead you through and show you what they've been learning! You do not need to sign up for a time, it is an open house concept so you are welcome to come at any point during the evening. - ** Thursday, March 19th from 8:00-1:00 will be scheduled interviews for EDC parents only! I will be calling each EDC parents to set up a time, if this Thursday does not work for some of you we can figure out another time that works best! A note from Mrs. Fraser: Dear Parents and Guardians, Student-Led Conferences are coming soon! The purpose of these conferences is to provide your child the opportunity to share their accomplishments and celebrate all they have learned this year. Please note, we have made some changes to this year’s conference schedule:
The Scholastic Book Fair will be taking place in the Library on both of these dates. You are invited to please visit with your child to shop for books. We look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday evening, March 18, for a night of celebrating our learning! Sincerely, Ms. Brenna Fraser Principal, Rosscarrock School [email protected] EDC A.M.
- The morning group had a very busy and eventful week at school. We continued our learning around friendship, being kind to one another, including and how to recognize and label the emotions that we can feel. The students continued reading the story, The Color Monster and labeling how they were feeling that day by placing colored pom poms into the corresponding bucket (e.g. yellow pom pom for happy into the yellow bucket). I was very happy to see the students continuing with this language throughout the week while participating in different activities (e.g. Ms. Jenna I feel like the blue monster, because I am sad, I want a turn). The adults in our room also switched some centers around and changed our daily schedule up a little bit, we were all very impressed on how well the kids did with the change! We will be starting a new unit next week all about pets and ocean creatures! EDC & Kindergarten P.M. - The students had an awesome week! We had a very special guest in our classroom on Thursday...we had Ms. W and her service dog Max come and visit and show us what his job is. We learned that there are many dogs that have special jobs and can help people in many different ways; that when we see service dogs out in the community with a special vest on it means they are working and that we cannot pet them. The kids had lots of great questions for Ms. W and are already asking when they will be back for a visit! We finished our unit on friendship by drawing a picture of ourselves with a friend! The students did a great job and Ms. Jenna will have this work on our bulletin board for parent-teacher interviews. We are starting a new unit on pets next week, Ms. Jenna is going to have a dramatic play vet center ready to go along with some fun learning on what pets need to be happy, healthy and safe! Reminders: - I will be sending information home soon around parent- teacher interviews on March 18th and 19th - Afternoon students: I will be asking each child to bring a shoe box to school next week as we will be making our own mini pet habitats for the pet of their choice! They will have a chance to create their own pet out of modeling clay and make bowls, toys, beds ect. out of loose parts! - It has been a busy, yet a fast couple of weeks in EDC and Kindergarten. The students had so much fun last week for our Valentines & Friendship celebration. Thank you to those students who brought treats and cards, everyone felt very special and enjoyed the day!
EDC A.M. - This week in EDC we continued our story, The Napping House as well as started a new story called, The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas. One day, Color Monster wakes up feeling very confused. His emotions are all over the place; he feels angry, happy, calm, sad and scared all at once! To help him, a little girl shows him what each feeling means through color. As this adorable monster learns to sort and define his mixed up emotions, he gains self-awareness and peace as a result. The students really loved the pop-up images in the story and at the end were able to pick a colored pom pom and place it in the proper bucket (e.g. blue pom pom for sad goes in the blue bucket). The students also got to practice making all the different faces and had their peers guess how they were feeling! We will be continuing with this story next week as well as completing some friendship art to wrap up our unit. Kindergarten & EDC P.M. - This week the Kindergartens and EDC students continued their unit on Friendship and made their very own buckets to go with the story, Have You Filled a Bucket Today! I have been very impressed with all the students on how well they have grasped the concept of being bucket fillers, I have seen students sharing more, including their friends, saying kind things to one another and helping each other out when it is needed; everyones buckets are getting full with pom poms for being bucket fillers! This week I challenged the Kindergarten students by teaching them how to assess their own work using a basic rubric I created. First I showed the students three pictures I had drawn of Ms. Jenna being a good friend. The first picture had no color and just stick people, the second picture had a little color and some added detail, the third picture had lots of color and detail. I explained that the first picture is a sad face, the second was a flat face and the third was a smiley face. I explained I was looking for smiley face pictures, and that the students could compare their work to the rubric to see where their picture fit and what they needed to add to make it even better. I was very impressed on how eager the students were to start their picture and with some help from the adults they started to understand the self assessment concept. We will be continuing this work next week as we wrap up our friendship unit. Reminders: - Wednesday, February 26th is Pink Shirt Day. This is a day when people come together and wear pink shirts to show they are against bullying. Your child is more than welcome to wear a pink shirt to show support against bullying to school on Wednesday! - Some of you maybe wondering when the next parent-teacher interviews are. They will be held on March 18th and 19th. I will be sending a letter home in March and signing everyone up for a spot to come in and chat ! Stay tuned EDC A.M.
- This week in EDC the students started a couple new interactive stories and have been learning about Friendship & Family. The first story we've been reading is, Old MacDonald Lost His Animals by Ms. Jenna. The students have a chance to find all of the farm animals that have been hidden around the classroom and place them back into the barn. The second story we've been reading is, The Napping House by Don & Audrey Woods. In a wide-awake bed a granny tries to sleep along with a child, dog, cat, mouse and flea, once they all fall asleep the flea bites the mouse, who wakes the cat and so on! The students get to follow along using visuals and stack blocks to represent the characters, they get to practice their sequencing skills along with learning new vocabulary. They have also been practicing drawing themselves and their friends during table top time. EDC & Kindergarten P.M. - This week the students worked on learning more about Ukraine for our cultural night and helped Ms. Jenna put together our information board as well as create their own authentic Ukraine eggs to display! The students had so much fun decorating their eggs and learning about all the different foods people eat in Ukraine. We have also started our unit on Friendship and are reading the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today by Carol McCloud. The book explains that everyone in the world has an invisible bucket that holds your good thoughts and feelings about yourself. You feel very happy and good when your bucket is full and you feel very sad and lonely when your bucket is empty. You fill a bucket when you show love to someone, when you say or do something kind, or even just giving a smile. When you do these things along with many other kind gestures you fill your bucket and others at the same time. However, you can dip into other peoples buckets and your own when you make fun of someone, when you say or do mean things or even when you ignore someone! As a class we will be making our own buckets for the classroom to fill with pom poms and learning about the different ways we can fill our buckets and our friends in the classroom. The students are very excited about this learning! Reminders: - We will be hosting our Cultural Night on Wednesday, February 12th from 6:00-7:30! Parents, siblings and friends are welcome to come to the gym and explore all the centers and tasty food from around the world! - We will be celebrating Friendship and Valentines Day in our classroom on Wednesday, February 12th. Ms. Jenna will have some special games, popcorn and Valentines cards to hand out. If your child would like to bring Valentines cards for their friends please make sure there is enough for everyone. The morning class has a total of 10 students and the afternoon has a total of 13 students. - There is NO SCHOOL Thursday, February 13th due to Teachers Convention and NO SCHOOL Monday, February 17th for Family Day! |
